What happens in a skin check

A full skin check is a systematic examination of your skin by Dr. Suran Rajapakse. Individual spots of concern are examined closely using dermoscopy, which magnifies and lights the lesion so features invisible to the naked eye can be assessed.

You are welcome to point out anything that worries you, and equally welcome to have the examination done thoroughly whether or not you have noticed something yourself.

Who should have one

Skin checks matter most for people with many moles, atypical naevi, a history of melanoma in themselves or their family, fair skin, or years of significant sun exposure. Living in Australia puts most of us somewhere on that list.

How often you should return depends on your own risk rather than on a single rule, and Dr Suran will give you a straight answer at the end of the appointment.

One doctor, every visit

Every appointment at Gentle Hands is with Dr. Suran Rajapakse. It is the same person examining your skin each time, which is what makes noticing change across visits possible in the first place.

Skin checks, mapping, surgery, cryotherapy and laser are all done in clinic at Ochre Medical Centre, so if something needs treating you are not sent elsewhere to start again.

If something is found

If a suspicious lesion is found, Dr Suran explains what he has seen and what he recommends before anything is done. Where a biopsy or excision is appropriate, it can be performed in clinic.

After every appointment you leave knowing what was found and what happens next, and follow-up questions are always welcome.

Booking, and what to bring

No referral is needed and you can book online in a few minutes, or call (02) 6103 3972. The clinic is at Ochre Medical Centre, 10 Hinder St, Gungahlin ACT 2912.

Come as you are. If you have a photograph of a spot that has changed, or notes from a previous check elsewhere, bring them. Anything that helps establish what your skin looked like before is useful.

Common questions

Who will perform my skin check?

All appointments are performed by Dr Suran Rajapakse, ensuring continuity of care and consistent monitoring over time.

How often should I have a skin check?

The recommended frequency depends on your individual risk factors, including your skin type, sun exposure history, personal or family history of skin cancer, and the number of moles you have. Dr Rajapakse will recommend an appropriate follow-up schedule.

What happens during a skin cancer check?

A comprehensive skin examination is performed using dermoscopy, a specialised imaging technique that allows detailed assessment of moles and skin lesions.

Are Medicare rebates available?

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible consultations and procedures. Our team can provide further information when booking.

Should I remove makeup before my skin check?

Yes. For the most accurate assessment, please attend without makeup, sunscreen, moisturiser, or other skin products. If you have concerns under your fingernails or toenails, please remove any nail polish beforehand. Artificial tanning products can affect skin assessment and are best avoided for several weeks before your appointment where possible.

What should I wear for a skin check?

Comfortable clothing that can be easily removed or adjusted for examination is recommended.
